The motif is a lacquered comb excavated from Jomon period archaeological sites. It seems to have had a stronger implication of being used for ritualistic or magical purposes rather than just as an ornament. Inspired by this, the appearance of thousands of years of aging was imbued into a current, Hundred Yen shop hair clip (similar to a Dollar store item).
